New River West Tributaries FDS Study Narrative

The New River West Tributaries FDS is a limited detailed study that proposes floodplain boundaries for approximately 30 linear watercourse miles of previously unstudied watercourses within the City of Phoenix, the City of Peoria, and unincorporated parts of Maricopa County.

All watercourses tie in to existing floodplain zones at their downstream limits of study.

Almost all of the study Drainage Area contains undeveloped rangeland. The Drainage Area is roughly 33 square miles in area. Several areas contain moderately sized hydraulic structures and some potential diversions. However, the Diversions are not FEMA certified. Therefore, hydraulic modeling and delineation in those areas may consider the “worst case scenario”.

Once prepared, the study map sheets will depict the 1 percent annual chance floodplain boundaries over both 2’ CI mapping and aerial photo background. The contour mapping was done in 2003, and the aerial photography was re-done in 2004. The proposed floodplain boundaries will be reviewed and plotted on study map sheets that cover the study area.

The results, including the proposed floodplain boundaries, will be delivered in a Technical Standard Data Notebook. The results will be reviewed and approved by the District prior to submitting the results to FEMA.
