Flood Insurance Restudy of Santa Maria River Levee Failure Analysis

Santa Barbara County, CA

Scope/Activity Statement

Flood Insurance Studies (FISs) for Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties depict the Santa Maria River Levee, near the City of Santa Maria as providing protection from the 1-percent annual chance flood. However, recent review of the levees has found that the levees along Santa Maria River and Bradley Canyon do not provide protection from the 1% annual chance flood.

MAPIX-M is to restudy the Santa Maria River and Bradley Canyon to reflect the flood hazards for these flooding sources in the vicinity of the City of Santa Maria. The digital workmaps will depict flood hazard data overlain on aerial photographs provided by the U.S. Geological Survey. In addition, the data will be created in GIS format, which will allow municipal governments to combine it with their local GIS for floodplain management and land use planning.
